Trevor Boris Interview

Celebrating its 18th birthday this year, Leicester Comedy Festival will be once again welcoming comedians of every style from all over the world. Travelling one of the furthest distances to be here is Canadian comedian Trevor Boris who will be bringing his fast paced and edgy comedy to the festival for three nights!

Kicking off at the Gay Comedy Night on 4th February (the first day of the festival) at the Y Theatre in Leicester as part of a mixed bill of comedians, Trevor will then take his solo show to The Crumblin’ Cookie on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th February.

We managed to catch up with Trevor as he prepared for his transatlantic trip to find out more!

Hi Trevor, nice to meet you! Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Well, im a gay farmer, turned comedian and TV Host.. you know, that old story. I’m from Canada, the land of hockey and maple syrup. Sometimes we even play hockey on frozen maple syrup. It’s super fun! And delicious.

You’re a household name in your native Canada as a standup comedian and TV host, have you performed in the UK before?
Very true. I am a national treasure here in Canada. I’m even on the 5 cent piece sitting on Celine Dion’s lap. Ok, not even close, and I have done a few shows in London, but this will be my true introduction to the UK which I’m very excited about. I hear Brits really really love Canadian comedians ;)

How did you get into comedy?
One night in the town I’m from I was hypnotized by a comedy hypnotist, ok I wasn’t really hypnotized, but I played along. But, I was the star of the show, so I went back the next night and he put me in the show again remembering me and knowing I was funny. After the show, people kept coming up to me telling me how much they liked me. I got hooked on that attention right away, although I knew I couldnt make a career out of being a hypnotist’s assistant, so I tried stand up.

What’s the best/worst heckle you’ve ever received?

For the most part me being gay never is an issue but I had one show in a really small town in Alberta, which is like the Texas of Canada where I could tell the crowd was really uncomfortable.. then some hillbilly in a cowboy hat just shouted out ‘It’s not wrong.. it’s just different’ which made me laugh. Then he spit into a bucket.

You’re performing at the Gay Comedy Night as part of the Leicester Comedy Festival alongside lots of other great acts. Do you have a favourite gay/lesbian comedian (past or present)?

I really love my good buddy Scott Capurro who’s from SF but is based out of London. We performed together at the Cape Town Comedy Fest in South Africa a few years ago and had the most fun ever.

(more info about Scott here: www.scottcapurro.com)
You’ve also got two solo dates during LCF, tell us a little about that show…
The show is about the journey I’ve taken relationship wise in my life. I came out pretty late at 22, then spent five years with my first boyfriend who I was engaged to even. Then, it completely blew up and at 27 I entered the dating world for the first real time of my life. It was horrible. I tried every dating site imaginable, for some reason everyone i dated for a year and a half was 19 years old.. it wasn’t pretty. Along the way I’ll also talk about how stupid it is that gay men cannot donate blood, and of course Oprah. It’s quite a journey! Plus, if that wasn’t enough there may also be monkeys*. This show was filmed in Vancouver last year and is available in stores in N. America so im really excited to be bringing it to the UK!

*there will not be monkeys

Between shows will you be going to any other gigs? Any acts in particular you’re excited to see?
I have a show on the 4th and then my solo shows aren’t until the 12/13th so i think im actually going to go to Moscow for a few days. I’ve always wanted to buy a toy with a smaller toy inside of it.

Catch Trevor as part of Gay Comedy Night at The Y Theatre on 4th February or his solo show at The Crumblin’ Cookie on 12th and 13th of February.
