Legendary theatre director Max Stafford-Clark is coming to Curve, Leicester this October to direct BANG BANG BANG, a powerful new play by Stella Feehily about the lives of humanitarian workers. This Curve Co-Production will explode into the Studio, 4 – 8 October.
Writer Stella Feehily brings her trademark wit and emotional insight to this revealing new play that goes behind the public face of charities, journalists and NGOs. To gain a unique and detailed insight into the lives of these workers, Feehily, Stafford-Clark and a group of the actors interviewed aid workers, doctors, human rights defenders, government advisors, journalists and photographers over a two week period.
A topical examination of civil war and unrest, Bang Bang Bang follows a seasoned humanitarian worker and her idealistic young colleague on a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
For Mathilde it’s an induction into a life world’s away from her own. For Sadhbh it’s a return to madness and chaos away from her lover and London – exactly as she likes it. But while Mathilde lets off steam with a photographer and a spliff, Sadhbh (“Sive”) has her own encounter: tea with a smart, brutal young warlord she’s investigating. Or is it the other way round?
Feehily says:
“We found a lot of very serious young people doing important work, much of it going unrecognised. There were stories of wild parties, but what was most impressive was their commitment and integrity. The play is about a group of humanitarian workers, and traces an erosion from idealism to cynicism, and the toll it takes on their personal lives. It’s about the point at which the helper needs help.”
Cast includes: Julie Dray, Jack Farthing, Orla Fitzgerald and Dan Fredenburgh
The play comes to Curve following its opening at the Bolton Octagon and precedes a four week run at the Royal Court Theatre, London. Max Stafford-Clark was Artistic Director of the Royal Court from 1979 to 1993., where his work included the premieres of SERIOUS MONEY, TOP GIRLS (a new production of which is currently running at Trafalgar Studios) and OUR COUNTRY’S GOOD. His productions for Out of Joint include THE BIG FELLAH, TALKING TO TERRORISTS, THE PERMANENT WAY, SHOPPING AND F***ING and the world-touring, Africa-inspired MACBETH.
