FACE Feb & March Lineup!

With a whole year of sell-out parties headlined by a fine selection of both underground heroes and unquestionable legends, as well as picking up a Mixmag Award for Best UK Club Night, it’s fair to say Face had a cracking 2011. There were label parties, UK talent showcases, imports of sand during the summer, partnerships with Cream, Snowbombing and so much more.

And 2012 is looking just as big. January, February and March will see the likes of like Larse, Jordan Peak, Maja Jane Coles, DJ W!ld, System of Survival and many many more all taking up their place behind the decks at the three roomed Rainbow (Birmingham) this party calls home.

February 4 – FACE

Maya Jane Coles, Adam Shelton, Tristan & Frenchy + Residents

It’s an all nighter at Face this week, with 2020 Vision and Hypercolour heroine Maja Jane Coles headlining.

With a debut album about to drop MJC couldn’t be hotter right now. Here deep vocal house is catchy as hell and has been caned by DJs all over the world. The woman herself is a fine spinner, too, so is a welcome guest.

She will be joined by Back to Basics resident legends Tristan and Frenchy, whilst local lad and One Records boss Adam Shelton is also on the line-up.

Feb 11 – The Room Swap – FACE Meets Zutekh

with Residents, plus Dolce Vita in The Courtyard

Manchester night Zutekh is a close brethren of Face and tonight all the respective residents get together for a house party like none other, this time taking place in the Cellar part of the venue whilst Dolce Vita crew take to the Courtyard. Its called ‘The Room Swap’ and is something highly anticipated by many FACE regulars.

Feb 18 – FACE Meets FREQ

Bunny, Dave James, Cormac (WYS), Jordan Fittz, + Cellar Door Meets Vikings

Face Meets FREQ this week, with residents from both camps chipping in their house and techno wares alongside Bunny, Dave James and WetYourself man, Cormac. London night – Vikings take to the Cellar for the first time too.

Feb 25 – FACE Meets Filth

Larse, Jordan Peak, Luke Pompey, Cubiq (Live), Danny Savage, + Cellar Door Meets FOH

Leeds night Filth is one of the biggest in the country, and tonight they pop over to Birmingham with resident and founder Danny Savage, plus residents Cubiq and Luke Pompey all playing alongside One Records young sensation, Jordan Peak. His rough and ready tech house sound has taken hi all over Europe recently.

Germany’s Larse is the main headliner though, with his releases on Noir and We Love This he has carved out a niche for himself – one you want to get lost in on the dancefloor, for sure…

March 3 – FACE

DJ W!ld, System of Survival, Anthony Collins, Adam Shelton & Nisekay

(With Cream Classics in The Warehouse & Lots More)

It’s another partnership with Cream that defines this weeks party at The Rainbow, with DJ Wild, System of Survival, Anthony Collins, Adam Shelton and Nisekay all lining up.

Cocoon man DJ W!ld is a Circo Loco regular out in Ibiza and crafts floor ready house and tech like few others today on labels like Luna, Robosoul and more. He will be joined by another Frenchman in the form of Anthony Collins whose classy house on Culprit and Curle has made him a talent to be reckoned with, whilst System of Survival add another Circo Loco force to the line-up.

Their own productions have found homes with Freak’n'Chic, Tenax and Blau Motif to name a few, as well as being picked up for compilations such as Moon Harbour’s Circo Loco Anniversary CD or both Loco Dice and Marco Carola’s TimeWarp Series.

Finally, One Records head honcho and Below founder Adam Shelton adds his rugged tech vibes to proceedings and Nisekay completes the line-up.

March 10 – The Room Swap – FACE Meets Shadow City

Oneman, + FACE residents in Cellar Door

Expect house, bass, techno and more at this week’s Face party which sees them join forces with Shadow City and have rudeboy Rinse FM star Oneman come play his future garage, post dubstep sounds to the sweaty, skanking masses. FACE resident crew hit the cellar part of the venue for some serious underground House vibes.

March 17 – FACE Presents… VIVa MUSiC

Italoboyz, Darius Syrossian, Smak Pony, Elliot Croft & Scott Bleepz

It’s time for another Face presents ViVA spectacular on march 17th when Steve Lawler sends his finest troops to do their tech house damage at The Rainbow.

Headliners and Mothership/Trapez artists Italoboyz ply an instrument rich, quirky and funky sound with their DJ sets, EPs and LPs and always make for a lively show where ever they play, be it Fabric, XOYO or anywhere across the states.

Joining them will be the tireless Darius Syrossian with his deep record bag which encompasses house music from across a broad spectrum, as will Smak Pony and residents Elliot Croft and Scott Bleepz.

After the success of their debut event with Lee Foss in October, ‘Fairlight’ return for their first party of 2012, welcoming Miguel Campbell (Hot Creations/Wolf + Lamb) and Medlar (Wolf Music Recordings) to Stealth for the second installment. With his track “Something Special” topping many end of year polls, Leeds based man of the moment Miguel Campbell heads to Nottingham to show us what all the fuss is about. Wolf Music’s Medlar joins the party and makes his Nottingham debut, along with Laura Chadwick and Fairlight residents Ellis & King.

Cirque de Spiceal!

The twisted urban circus, Cirque du Spiceal, wowed crowds at Bullring on Saturday night as an array of weird and wonderful characters descended on Spiceal Street.

Saturday’s event was the grand finale of the Cirque du Spiceal programme, which began on Monday 23rd January. Throughout the week between 7pm – 9pm diners at Spiceal Street have been entertained by a group of chimps, surprised by an invasion of a yeti and King Kong and watched on as fire breathers lit up the sky.

The ‘Caravan of Lost Souls’ was unleashed on St Martin’s Square bringing with it twisted circus acts including fire breathers, contortionists and a one man band performing tricks and illusions.

Diners at the restaurants on Spiceal Street – Browns Bar and Brasserie, ChaoBaby Thai Restaurant, handmade burger Co., Nando’s, Pizza Hut, Jamie’s Italian, wagamama and Mount Fujji – were treated to a series of 20 minute performances between 7pm – 10pm whilst Kerrang! Radio breakfast hosts, Loz and Keith, provided the soundtrack to their evening as they broadcasted live to the nation.

Louise Hamer-Brown, Head of Marketing at Bullring, commented: “The Cirque du Spiceal event has kept our shoppers and diners thoroughly entertained throughout the week with all kinds of weird and wonderful sights. At Bullring we’re known for doing things a little differently and therefore thought this was the perfect event to take place at Spiceal Street, which has firmly placed itself on the map of the city as a socialising hotspot.

The Nightingale get’s a revamp!

Work to totally revamp an iconic Birmingham nightclub is set to get under way after new owners rescued the business following its collapse.

Lawrence Barton, who already runs the Loft Lounge, Penthouse and Village Inn venues in Southside, took over the running of the Nightingale in January after it went into administration.

He has pledged to invest more than £1 million in the Kent Street venue and is starting with £200,000 refurbishment of the club’s top floor.

The refurbishment is the first phase of plans to remodel the venue, and will take place in February.

He said: “When I bought the Nightingale I pledged to invest money back into the venue and this is the start of an exciting programme of improvements to totally revamp the club and put the Nightingale back on the map.”

The buy-out by the Birmingham-born businessman secured 50 jobs at The Nightingale, a popular city centre venue, which dates back more than 40 years and has attracted stars such as Graham Norton, Alan Carr and Sir Ian McKellen.

The club in the heart of Birmingham’s gay village first opened in 1969 and has built up a loyal following among the gay community.

Mr Barton, who is Birmingham Pride’s director and sits on the board of Southside BID, added : “‘We’re very excited about bringing a new energy and clubbing spirit back to the top floor which will reinforce the Nightingale’s and therefore Birmingham’s ‘superclub’ status and ensure that we are right at the top of our game.”

Across one weekend in April, the full-on Circo Loco experience is coming to Birmingham. Known across the globe as the hedonistic and no holds barred after hour session held at DC; 10 each Monday, anyone who has been to Circoloco out in Ibiza will know what to expect – smiley faces, knowledgeable crowds and of course the most connoisseur beats. And it’s pretty much been that way since the night first started way back in 1999. As such, three typically off the wall events have been programmed in club spaces old and new across the city, with line-ups jammed packed with on-point talents from the worlds of house and techno.

The first will be April 7th from Midday until 1am and will see the launch of the brand new and hugely impressive Arena. As well as mind melting lights and pyrotechnics, the space will be decked out with heavy sound systems and all the extra promotion you’d expect of the world famous Circoloco brand. The space itself is a collection of Victorian railway arches under the over-reaching curve of The Rainbow’s embrace and somehow mimics the architecture of some ancient Coliseum and will hold up to 5, 000 ravers: in time, it will no doubt become one of the city’s most essential rave spaces. DJs will be ‘Loco favorites Jamie Jones, Kerri Chandler, Matthias Tanzmann, Dyed Soundorom, Dan Ghenacia, Cassy, The Martinez Brothers and Below main man Adam Shelton.

Once that event finishes, it will be to a warehouse at just past midnight where the sensational Hot Natured (aka Jamie Jones and Lee Foss)will take you through to 7am with a back to back set. Label mates Luca C and Ali Love as well as Clockwork and Richy Ahmed will also play, so expect plenty of creamy house sounds right through the night.

To finish off this Spring-time party extravaganza, Below will take the reins in The Courtyard (recently taken back to being a proper courtyard again, complete with natural light and exposed brick work, trees etc) for a day time special. This time the party runs from midday until 3am and will be headlined by one of the biggest teams in the game – namely Visionquest, which comprises Shaun Reeves, Lee Curtiss and Ryan Crosson. Of course, local night Below features too, with resident and founder Adam Shelton also playing, as will his One Records co-chief, Subb-an.

Circo Loco is amongst the most sought after party brands in the world and has multiple residencies around the world at the foremost temples of dance music as well as at leading festivals and conferences on all continents. This, then, is surely one of the most exciting clubbing prospects to have hit Birmingham in years…

A new owner for Birmingham’s Nightingale!

Jobs have been saved at Birmingham’s iconic Nightingale Club thanks to a new owner, who was found after the venue went into administration.

Mr Lawrence Barton, who already runs the successful Loft Lounge, Penthouse and Village Inn venues in Southside will take over the running of The Nightingale Club, and is set to invest more than £1million into the nightspot over the next few years.

The business was sold to the highest bidder last week, for an undisclosed sum, by administrator Zolfo Cooper, which was appointed in November when The Nightingale Club went into administration.

The buy-out by the Birmingham-born businessman has secured 50 jobs at The Nightingale, a popular city centre venue, which dates back more than 40 years and has attracted stars such as Graham Norton, Alan Carr and Sir Ian McKellen.

The Kent Street club in the heart of Birmingham’s gay village first opened in 1969 and has built up a loyal following among the gay community.
Mr Barton, who is Birmingham Pride’s director and sits on the board of Southside BID, today said he would be investing more than £1 million in the club over the coming years.

He said; “The Nightingale Club is a venue of paramount importance not only to Birmingham but to the UK’s wider gay community. We are very keen to build working partnerships with the other gay venues in the city along with developing the relationships already established with LGBT community groups, so that the acquisition of the Nightingale Club is of benefit to everyone.

“Personally I am very keen to see that the Nightingale once again becomes one of the biggest gay super clubs in the country, which is not only good for the LGBT community but also good for Southside and Birmingham’s economy.”

Mr Barton added he would honour the current benefits to all Nightingale full members until April next year, and is set to hold a series of meetings for members and the wider LGBT community in the coming weeks to build a proactive relationship with them.

David Nash, operations manager for the group, added: “We are acutely aware of the historic significance of the club to our city and are extremely proud that we are presented with the opportunity to move the club forward and secure its future and rightful place as one of the most important venues in the city. It’s fantastic news that the ‘club’ remains under gay ownership and will continue to be run for the gay community.”

Existing Nightingale Club member, Keith Wistow commented: “I must applaud Lawrence Barton and his team for firstly honouring all the benefits to existing members, but I’m absolutely delighted that the members will remain at the very heart of the club’s future.”
